Lying Eyes - Truth Or Fiction?

As the popular song says, you can't hide those lying eyes. Or can you? Do a persons eyes really reveal whether they are lying or not? Sometimes.

Lying Eyes - The Research

Much of the research done on lie detecting involves researchers telling subjects when to lie. These lies have no effect on the person's life, of course. There are no meaningful rewards or punishments, so the normal behavior that would be present when lying may not be there. This may help explain why a lot of researchers have come to believe that there are no reliable indicators of dishonesty.

There is another flaw in much of the research. This is the fact that researchers look only for universal indicators, meaning behaviors that most people engage in when lying. If most people averted their eyes when telling a lie, for example, that would be a useful indicator. Not finding these universal indicators, researchers again conclude that  there are no reliable indicators of dishonesty.

But what if when telling real lies, instead of "laboratory lies," a man always blinked his eyes? That would be a good example of "lying eyes," and a useful indicator to watch for with this man. However, since behavior in a lab is probably different, and since most people don't blink when lying, researchers would generally ignore this case.

Aldert Vrij of the University of Portsmouth in England, decided to correct these flaws in the research. he started by watching real-life police interrogation videos, concentrating on cases where the true facts were later determined, so he knew when the subjects were lying. He found that there were fairly reliable clues to whether a person is lying, but that these are not universal. They are individual.

One person consistently averts his gaze when lying, for example, while another has greater eye-contact when lying. Most research doesn't test for these individual factors, so the results seem to indicate that lie-detecting isn't viable. But a person who takes into account the individuals habits and patterns of behavior can detect lies better.

Detecting Lying Eyes

To do your own lie detection then, go ahead and watch the eyes, and any body movements. But watch for individual indicators. How will you know what they are? With a little research of your own.

If you want to learn what your husband does when lying, for example, you have to watch carefully when he is lying. Start by asking a question to which you know the truth, but he is likely to lie about. If he does lie, watch those eyes and hand and anything else. If he tells the truth, you'll just have to try again with a new question.

Do this at least several times to be sure that any indicators are reliable. Ask a tough question or two that he will tell the truth about too, to see if he reacts the same under pressure, or only when lying. You can also watch as he lies to others on the phone or in person. With time and careful observation, you might find some reliable indicators. He take a deep breath when he is being dishonest. He might stop breathing for a moment. He might bite his nails. Or he might have lying eyes.

The Backwards Lying Trap

Is he (or she) lying? There are numerous clues that can help you spot a lie. You can learn about body language and how words are used, and even how to trap a liar. But one of the more interesting ways to tell if someone is lying comes from recent research at the University of Portsmouth. It has to do with our difficulty telling a story backwards.

Researchers started with the general theory that it is harder to invent a story than to tell a true one. This makes sense. If someone asked you what you did last night, you would be able to remember and recount the events quickly, right? It might take you a little more time to invent a story.

Starting from this, they decided to test to see what happens when people try to relate events in reverse order after first doing so in chronological order. Naturally it is harder, but most of us have no problem doing this: "I came home. Just before that I was at the convenience store, and before that at the bar on fifth street." However, would it be more difficult to do this if the story was invented? Would you make more mistakes and change your story?

This is exactly what the testing indicated. It included 290 police officers, and 255 students. The police officers were supposed to determine whether the student in each interview was lying or telling the truth (students were prepped beforehand to do one or the other). Regular police interview methods were used, and then "cognitive load interviews" were tried, in which the "suspects" were asked to recall the most recent events and work backwards.

The results? Officers were much more likely to determine who was lying when these "reverse tactics" were used. "Those paying attention to visual cues proved significantly worse at distinguishing liars from those telling the truth than those looking for speech-related cues," said researcher Aldert Vrij. "Certain visual behaviors are associated with lying, but this doesn't always work. Nor is comparing a suspect's responses during small talk, and then in a formal interview, likely to be much help."

Vrij also noted that unlike those telling the truth, "...liars tend to tell their stories in a strict chronological time order..." That's another little clue we can use to tell if someone is lying. But the primary lesson here is that liars have a harder time keeping their stories straight when they have to tell them backwards.

Don’t get me wrong, “romantic” shows still get a lot of air time there too. But I think media should concentrate less on the negative and more on the positive. Breakups and unfaithful lovers are put on the spot light, while a simple happy family is considered boring and stays in the background. Same goes for books that give you the latest advice on how to dump someone or how to get over being dumped. Why is it so hard to find a book that will explain how to fix a relationship and help you get your lover back after a bad breakup? I personally believe that books like that should be more popular than the defeatist attitude ones.

 

In some US states there are a divorce rates of 40%. When will this end? Those are mind blowing statistics! Did people stop trying to fix their problems and simply abandon ship? I think that almost all problems have a solution. Even if one of the union members is cheating, doesn’t mean the couple has to breakup. This act of betrayal, must have been provoked by something. Is it something that husband did not do? Could this be a one time thing, that can be prevented if the couple establishes a better spiritual connection? Well, I was also really wanted to know this answer, so I went out to find the reasons as to why some men are unsuccessful with women.

This short review is just for the guys out there who are thinking of getting Guy Gets Girl but just want to know what's inside!

I reviewed this book recently and was glad to see that there are actually 3 volumes to this course and it was better than I expected.

Unlike most of the other seduction books you can find, this ebook is actually written by a woman, Tiffany Taylor. This book is special, because it is written by a woman who is willing to teach men how to get laid with her fellow females! This is really nice!

The course will give you the understanding of how the female brain works in terms of attraction and dating. The author, Tiffany illustrates to the reader that women use emotions to make up their minds instead of logic. That is to say, if they feel an emotion, they'll act upon it regardless of what logic dictates. This will even be the case whereby the woman knows what she is feeling is totally stupid and illogical.

I guess that women being irrational and illogical is actually a good thing. This is because Tiffay Taylor goes into detail to explain to you the things you need to do through mind games you can play with women, so that you'll be able to turn on the attraction switches in her head for her to want you.  So, all you really need to do is figure out what emotional switch you need to flick on inside her mind, and you will be able to generate attraction.

There are also interesting topics apart from understanding women, such as learning how to read and understand the use of body language to make you a better seducer.

To save a lot of guys out there their time and money who have heard of this Double Your Dating book, here's a quick review of the contents that I have found interesting!

David DeAngelo's book covers a lot of topics, but the ones I found most interesting were:

• differences between the sexes
• dispelling myths and misconceptions

Should you just being yourself?

David talks about that most guys should not try to be yourself, but instead be the best self he needs to be. It is important that a lot of guys first learn how to be interesting to women, because when they are "just being themselves" they fail at getting women. So, just for a brief monent in time, don't worry about being true to yourself and learn how to get girls, then once you can do that, make that new you the real you!

What are the differences in the gender roles between the sexes?

In the book, David talks about how men and women differ and why men nowadays are confused. In our society, a lot of guys do not know what to do, because they are all confused having been brainwashed by the media. In order to get women, some guys just think they need to be nice guys or something. That is where the issues arise. It is no secret that girls like men who do not like like women and act like men. Since a fair amount of men are confused they start to act like women. That is why men nowadays are not sucecssful with women, because a lot of them act like a women themselves!

Misconceptions dispelled

Society has given the impression to men that in order to get women they need to be either, tall, handsome, rich or powerful. This is not true and clearly false. The reason for this is because having these qualities in your personality shows women that men with these elements have a high social standing. But in order to have higher social value, a guy doesn't need to have these materialistic things. David teaches you how to get these qualities as part of your personality so you are able to get women without being a rockstar!

I like how Joseph points out that there are at least 3 more ways to open and approach women that I didnt even know existed. Eg. using the environment or being indirect. The head and mental games you need to overcome when you are approaching women are also covered.

The thing I like the most about the book is that the author used to be an average frustrated chump when it came to dating. Joseph is no natural when it comes to the dating game, so he knows how a normal guy would feel when they want to approach women!
